SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY The New Jersey Militia, Heard’s Brigade is a company of living historians re-creating the life of the militia soldiers and civilians of the American Revolution. As we feel it is important to understand the past, we have a scholarship opportunity in the form of an annual essay contest based on a topic that we have chosen. We are please to again offer this scholarship opportunity in 2012 and have decided on the essay topic. The general eligibility requirements are that the entrant must be a graduating senior from a New Jersey secondary school and have been accepted at an accredited college or university for the fall semester of that same year. Previous Year's Scholarship Topics and Winning Essays 2011 ESSAY TOPIC: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Using both researched facts and your own thoughts, analyze the past, present and future relevance of the Second Amendment to the Constitution." The winning essay was submitted by a senior at John P. Stevens High School in Edison, NJ. Click here to read the essay. 2010 ESSAY TOPIC: "Using both facts and your own thoughts, analyze the reasons why the thirteen American colonies were able to win their independence from Great Britain. Moving beyond the "good guy vs. bad guy" ideology we learned as children, discuss such things as participants and circumstances, etc." The winning essay was submitted by a senior at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ. Click here to read the essay. 2009 ESSAY TOPIC: "The winners of the Revolutionary War are generally referred to as "Patriots" or "Americans". The losers, however, were also "Patriots" or "Americans". Discuss the population of the thirteen colonies at that time with respect to their support of that war. Using both facts and your own thoughts, Who was for it: Who was against it? And Why?"
