NEW JERSEY MILITIA, HEARD’S BRIGADE

$500 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The New Jersey Militia, Heard’s Brigade is a company of living historians re-creating the life of the militia soldiers and civilians of the American Revolution. We are offering a $500 scholarship opportunity in the form of an essay contest. 

ESSAY TOPIC: "George Washington's leadership of the Continental Army has been both praised and criticized for over 200 years. Using both researched facts and your own thoughts, discuss the man and events with regard to George Washington's performance as commander-in-chief of the rebel forces during the American War for Independence." 

Submissions will be judged on content and presentation of ideas. Spelling and grammar do count. The winner will be notified by March 31, 2012.

To be eligible the applicant must meet the following criteria:

• New Jersey residence for 12 months.
• 2012 graduating senior from a New Jersey secondary school.
• Acceptance at an accredited college or university for the fall 2012 semester.
• Complete an original essay of no more than 1000 words, nor less than 750 words in length on the topic provided.
• Provide a letter from a school official (teacher or guidance counselor) on school letterhead with contact information, affirming the student meets the above criteria.
• Essays must be type-written and double-spaced, and include a title page stating student's full name, grade, address and home telephone number, name of high school and date, with no identifying information on any other page.
• Essays become the property of the New Jersey Militia, Heard's Brigade and will be published on our website.

The award for the New Jersey Militia, Heard's Brigade Scholarship may be presented at the recipient's Senior Awards Ceremony by a member of the New Jersey Militia, Heard's Brigade. The award of $500 will be credited toward the fall 2012 semester. Should the recipient not graduate or attend college in 2012, the prize will pass to the second place entry.
